The 2009 Masterton Trophy Winners

2’s Pip Westquarter to the Points

The 2’s travelled to a very damp and dismal Pollmont for what was predicted to be a close encounter. Westquarter sitting 3rd bottom of the table have been running several teams close and with stats of played 5, won 1, lost 4 and still having a 50% ratio a tough game laid ahead.

With 2’s debutants Jamie Yellowlees and Kevin Meier in the side the Lions took to the field for the first innings.

Bamo and Sully opened up the day on a damp skiddy pitch. Three tight opening over’s from the duo forced some early pressure on the batsmen as Farooqui tried to sneak a quick single to AJ who was at Mid On. Clearly he didn’t expect AJ to have quite as powerful arm as he smashed the stumps down with the Farooqui finding himself several feet short and trundling off the park to find a replacement stump.

Bamo and Sully continued to pile the pressure on with some tight lines and conceded only 14 runs between them in the first 10 overs.

Joe and debutant Kev stepped up next and continued to apply pressure with very few runs coming off the bat.

Joe struck in his 3rd over bowling Sutherland for 14.

This brought Mumtaz out to bat who didn’t take long to get into the swing of things as he came out with a more attacking style of batting.

It took to the 22 over for the next wicket to fall as opener Sutton was out for 4 in what has to be described as a slow innings. Fraggle taking a good caught and bowled on his second attempt at catching it.

AJ bowling at the other end was bowling a great spell of variation. This was much to youngster Jamie Yellowlees expense as he used just about every part of his body including his head to stop the ball getting passed him. Jamie did brilliantly behind the stumps as he dealt admirably with step up to the 2’s level.

Mumtaz made 53 before being caught off AJ’s bowling and Jeremiah made 42 not out. A few drop catches meant Westquarter probably scored about 40 more runs than they should have.

With the wickets shared around 202 was the target to chase down.

Things didn’t get off to a great start for the 2’s as AJ went for 0 as he edged one to slip. Disco Dave Lawrie joined Jason in the middle and settled the innings down.

Disco had forgotten to switch off his ‘gun ho I’m batting at 6 mode’ and was scratching around for a while before eventually going LBW after wandering across his stumps.

Sully went 2 over’s later as he was caught off Mumtaz.
Lamby helped Jason make some in roads on the total before stepping on his own stumps.

Jason continued to show his class as he dominated some of the Westquarter bowling and reached his 50. Youngster Joe Kinghorn was thrown up the order with a license to swing his bat like we know he can. He made a quick 9 and rotated the strike well with Jason before being caught.

With the game finely in the balance Westy stepped up and produced an excellent display of batting as he made a quick fire 24. Jason and Westy making a 50 partnership to get the Lions back on track to take the points.

Westy however holed out to Mid off and left the task with Kevin Meier.

With a good bit of work still to do Kev did well to given Jason the strike as he blasted the remaining runs.

Kev made 11 while Jason carried his bat superbly to 111 not out. A Captains innings.
A very vital one at that.
