The 2009 Masterton Trophy Winners

2’s v Fruechie 2’s

This week the 2’s travelled to Fruechie to start off the 2nd half of the season on what proved to be one of the hottest days of the summer so far.

Losing the Toss stand in skipper Lamby was asked to bat first.

AJ and Disco Dave Lawrie led the attack.

A slow and steady start soon escalated as AJ spanked a massive 6 to the bottom end of the ground. He quickly moved on to 25 and was looking well set for another big score. AJ then guided one to slip as he tried to rotate the strike.

The score on 47 and Disco going well.

Westy looking to capitalise on his innings the previous week was undone on 2 as he missed one from the left armer.

Sully settled quickly and made a good partnership of 39 before getting out. Caught on 13 off spinner Munro.

Lamby was next and picked up where Sully had left off. Rotating the strike well with Disco. Lamby made a solid 18 before falling victim of Munro.

Disco went 2 over’s later on 68 with Lions looking like faltering.

Az then went for 0 after giving the fielder at point some catching practice.

This left the Lions on 135 for 6 with U15 players Kevin Meier and Joe Kinghorn at the crease.

The pair then proceeded to bat sublimely as they put on a 7th wicket partnership of 80.
Kev and Joe complimented each other perfectly with Kev’s well placed shots and Joe’s power hitting. They really put on a display of how to bat and showed some real maturity.

Kev eventually went on 38 as he tried to hard to push for a single from the keepers fumble and was run out at the bowlers end.

Joe followed a few balls later as he was caught on 42.

Bamo and Giggsy finished off the innings with a few extra runs and giving Fruechie the target of 236 to chase down.

Az and Bamo opened up the bowling and both struck in their first over’s leaving th home side on not very many for 2.

Az was struggling with no balls but was bowling tremendously.

Pressure from both ends saw Bamo take 2 more wickets in his opening spell of 7 over’s and giving him figures of 23 for 3 for the day.

Az bowled out and went 27 for 1 from his 10 over spell. Disappointingly though half of his runs came from no balls.

Giggsy made his return to the side with a 3 wicket haul. Though the first wicket was a bit fortunate as the batsmen played on to the top of his stumps.

With Fruechie about 70 odd for 5 it was only a matter of time for the Lions to take the points. However, Wright and Christie had other ideas and proved difficult to remove from the wicket.

Highlight of the day though was Disco Dave Lawrie and his eagerness to get some crowd participation on the go.

Christie hit one towards the club house. Disco raced after it and in a fantastic attempt to stop another boundary he slid full stretch across the ground then clattered into a few spectators and smashed a few glasses.

Christie was proving to be especially difficult as he came out swinging and ruined Meier’s and Giggsy’s figures. Giggsy changed ends and eventually got him though and finished with figures of 55 for 3.

AJ at the other end was using all his skills to conjure up a wicket and eventually got his revenge on Wright as he went for 38. Fruechie on 155 for 8.

With Sully plugging away at the top end now he eventually got a good edge that was well taken by 13 year old Jamie Yellowlees who took his first catch for the 2’s.

Jay finished off the proceedings by bowling the last batsmen for 6.

Fruechie 176 all out. Points in the bag, a great performance all round but clearly the heroes of the day being Joe and Kev for a magnificent partnership.
